Drawing the Essence: A Classical Approach to Starting Portraits

In this individualized workshop, with 4 students, we’ll focus on the initial stage of portraiture, emphasizing accuracy and building a solid foundation, while discussing how to think about and capture the sitter’s essence and mood. Although this workshop focuses on drawing, it is equally valuable for painting students. You’ll be guided through the process of simplifying the portrait into basic shapes, proportions, and planes, ensuring a strong structure for your artwork. To help you prepare, a guide will be provided a couple of days prior, so you can review the material and come ready with questions.
Experienced painters who wish to paint during the workshop are welcome to do so with a limited palette, though I highly encourage exploring this stage through drawing. Supply list will be provided by December 8th.

- Day 2: Draw from a live model, building on Day 1’s principles.
- Both days Include demos, lectures, and personalized feedback and a 40-minute lunch break.
